Ever since the adoption of agile methodologies, the hierarchical approach to business has shifted to a more collaborative approach. In the tech-focused world agile methods are implemented using component teams (i.e. UX, Dev, Business, Tester, etc.). An even more expansive way of collaborating is achieved with cross-functional teams.
According to Wikipedia, a cross-functional team is a group of people with different functional expertise working toward a common goal.
Successful tech companies like Amazon, Netflix, and Microsoft use this approach and also leverage OKR’s (Objective Key Results) to maintain alignment. This wider pool of resources coupled with clearly defined and achievable goals is a powerful recipe.
The advantages are numerous, silos are broken, expertise from different areas brings multiple synergies, efficiency is increased, and the sense of purpose within the organization is strengthened.
